What to Keep, Donate, or Haul So the Living Room Can Host in Metro Vancouver

Go Junk Go Team
7 min read

The sectional is still against the window wall, and two cushions have slipped to the floor. The recliner arm is torn, and the footrest will not lock. A loveseat nobody sits on blocks the path from the front door to the kitchen. Early November in Metro Vancouver, rain on the glass, and December guests are already on the calendar.

This post is that room: the sofa, the sectional, the recliner, and the loveseat that has to leave so guests have a place to sit. A whole-house pass before Thanksgiving is covered separately in our pre-holiday declutter guide. The dining table is a different room, covered separately in clear the dining room before holiday guests. A sofa that arrives with a store delivery is covered separately in haul before a Black Friday delivery. Year-round couch options are covered separately in how to get rid of a couch in Vancouver.

Why early November is the window for the living room

December guests need a place to sit. Many households host through mid-December. The sectional has to move before a tree or extra chairs can fit.

Remembrance Day is Wednesday, November 11, a statutory holiday in British Columbia. A lot of people are home around that long weekend. Empty the cushions that day, before a late-November delivery window.

Evenings are already dark. The clocks fell back on November 1. Across Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley, a sofa carry after work happens under a hallway light.

Rain is on the window. Wet season is underway. Fabric left on a driveway overnight takes on water. Foam holds that water, and cloth can pick up mold. Same-day or next-day pickup may be possible when the schedule allows. Share photos so the team can plan a stair, a landing, or a strata elevator in Vancouver, Burnaby, or Surrey.

What usually fills the room before guests sit down

Walk it the way a guest will: the door, a place to put a bag down, and a clear path to the kitchen. Keep what still seats people.

The sofa and the sectional

  • A three-seat sofa with a sag, a water stain, or a frame that rocks
  • A sectional that no longer fits once a tree and extra chairs are in the room
  • A chaise and loose cushions that have already come apart at the brackets
  • When the sofa is the main piece, that is a furniture disposal job. If a bracket will not release, leave the sectional together. A piece that will not turn on a landing is covered separately in how to get rid of furniture from an apartment.

    The recliner and the loveseat

  • A recliner with a torn arm, a stuck footrest, or a mechanism that no longer locks
  • A powered recliner with a cord still plugged in behind the cushion
  • A loveseat used as a shelf for blankets and last year’s gift bags
  • Leave the recliner mechanism attached. Unplug a powered one and coil the cord. Do not cut the frame to force it through a door.

    Sleeping sofas

  • A sofa bed that has been the spare bed, mattress still inside
  • A fold-out that sticks halfway
  • Leave a sofa bed folded. Mattress swaps are covered separately in fall mattress and furniture haul.

    Waiting on a delivery

  • The old sofa pushed into the hall because a new one is ordered
  • An ottoman from a set you are no longer keeping
  • Plain cardboard from a sofa that already arrived, still in the corner

  • Set these aside. Fabric spray, solvent, batteries from a powered recliner, and any bottle you cannot name. Tell us when you book. Policies for specialty items can vary.

    Keep, donate, or haul

  • It still seats the people you are hosting, and it fits once the tree is up: keep it. One sofa, or the sectional pieces that still match.
  • Someone will collect it before the dinners: write the date down. If it is still there after that date, it joins the haul.
  • Clean, and a charity will take it in time: donate only if it leaves before you need the floor. Stains, a sag, and a smell are common reasons a pickup is refused.
  • A torn arm, a stuck footrest, a broken frame, or fabric that has already stained: haul it. November damp does not improve cloth or foam.
  • One sofa or one recliner is leaving: a single-item pickup may be enough.
  • A sectional, a loveseat, and a recliner go the same day: book multiple items or residential junk removal.

  • We recycle and donate when possible. Pricing is quoted by volume, and the firm price is confirmed on-site. Share photos so the team can plan the visit. Request a free quote, or see how volume quoting works on our junk removal page.

When a new sofa is on the way

Read the delivery terms before you assume the old sectional leaves with the new one.

  • Haul-away is listed for the sofa only: the recliner, the loveseat, and the ottoman may stay. Confirm it in writing.
  • Haul-away is not on the order: assume the old set stays. A crew bringing a sofa often will not take a recliner.
  • The path is stairs, an elevator, or a narrow hall: many offers stop at an easy carry. Name the floor when you book.
  • Both trucks are the same morning: book the old sofa a day or two before delivery.
  • It is a powered recliner or a sofa bed: say so, and leave the mechanism attached.

  • Black Friday is Friday, November 27, 2026. Book the old sofa before that window if guests are sitting down in December.

What should not go to the curb

A sofa is not a cart item. A sectional, a recliner, and a loveseat will not fit a household garbage cart, and they are not a blue-box item. Check your municipality’s bulky-item rules before you leave furniture at the curb. Rules differ across Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley.

Keep fabric indoors. A cloth sofa on a wet driveway overnight takes on water, and foam can pick up mold. Keep the set inside until the truck is there. Do not leave it in a lane.

The front walk stays open. Do not stage a sectional on the porch. That path is covered separately in clear the porch and front walk.

The hallway is not storage. In a condo, book the elevator and name the floor. Say so when you book apartment junk removal in Richmond or North Vancouver.

Cardboard is separate. Dry, flattened boxes from the new sofa can align with recycling disposal. Wet cardboard goes with the haul.

What you can prep before the crew arrives

A general pickup list is covered separately in how to prepare for a junk removal pickup.

    Safe DIY prep:

  • Pull loose cushions, throws, and anything stored under the sofa, and bag what you are keeping
  • Separate sectional pieces only if the clips release by hand
  • Leave a sofa bed folded, and unplug a powered recliner with the cord coiled
  • Clear a path for two people and a dolly, including the landing and the door swing
  • Photograph the sofa, the stair or elevator, and the truck stop
  • Note gate codes, parking limits, and a strata loading window
  • Set fabric spray, solvents, batteries, and unknown bottles aside, and say so when you book

  • Leave to the crew when you are unsure: a sectional on a tight stair, a sofa bed with the mattress still inside, a recliner with a stuck mechanism, and anything above the ground floor. Do not cut a frame apart to force it through a door.

Single item vs a full haul

Situation: one sofa, one recliner, or one loveseat is leaving, and the walk to the truck is straight. Lean toward a single-item pickup. Tell us if a sectional comes apart.

Situation: the sectional, the recliner, and the loveseat go the same morning, or the store will take only the matching sofa. Lean toward multiple items or residential junk removal. In a condo, name the elevator when you book.

Situation: furniture will keep coming for several days, with room for a container that does not block the door. Lean toward a bin. See bin rentals if a bin fits. One sofa is usually one visit.

Same-day junk removal may be possible when the schedule allows. Book before the new sofa and the guests need the same floor.

    Living room checklist before guests

    1. Walk the room: sofa, sectional pieces, recliner, loveseat, and the path to the kitchen

    2. Mark keep, donate, or haul, and put a date on anything someone else will collect

    3. Pull loose cushions and bag blankets and items stored underneath

    4. Keep fabric indoors and dry, and flatten dry cardboard away from the sofa

    5. Coil a recliner cord, and set batteries, sprays, and unknown bottles aside

    6. Clear the stair, the landing, and the elevator or hall, and keep the front steps open

    7. Photograph the seating, the turn, and the truck stop

    8. Request a free quote and note a sectional, a sofa bed, a recliner, or a stair carry

    9. Put the kept sofa back only after the haul is gone, so the path stays open for delivery
