What to Haul Before a New Couch, Mattress, or Appliance Arrives in Metro Vancouver

The new couch is paid for, and the delivery window is a weekday in late November. The old couch is still against the wall, the mattress is still on the bed, and the fridge is still full. Black Friday 2026 is Friday, November 27, and many of those orders arrive that week or in early December. Late October in Metro Vancouver is when that old piece needs a plan. The rain is already here. If the old couch is still there on delivery day, the new one has nowhere to land.

This post is the before-delivery plan: what usually has to leave, when a store's haul-away is enough, and when a separate pickup is the cleaner booking. A couch leaving a Vancouver home is covered separately in our couch removal guide. Swapping beds before the damp season is covered separately in fall mattress and furniture before damp. A fridge or washer that has already died is covered separately in appliance removal before winter and in how to dispose of appliances. Household TVs are covered separately in old TV and electronics disposal.

Why late October is the window before Black Friday

Black Friday is November 27, and the truck often comes after. Couches, mattresses, fridges, washers, and TVs ordered that week often arrive just after, or in early December if the first window slips.

The clocks fall back on November 1. Evenings get darker across Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley. A wet carry after dark is slower than a pickup booked in daylight.

Wet season is already the weather. A mattress or a cloth couch on a porch overnight picks up rain. Foam gets heavier, and it can pick up mold. Same-day or next-day pickup may be possible when the schedule allows. Share photos so the team can plan stairs, a strata elevator, or a tight hall.

What usually has to leave before the new piece arrives

Measure the door and the wall the new item needs. The old piece has to be out of that path before delivery day.

The couch or sectional

  • A sofa, loveseat, or sectional on the only wall the new one can use
  • A matching chair or a table with a cracked leg
  • Worn pieces fit furniture disposal. Stairs and elevators are covered separately in how to get rid of furniture from an apartment.

    The mattress and the bed

  • The mattress and box spring you are replacing, plus a frame or futon that will not fit beside the new bed
  • Keep it indoors. When the bed is the main piece, that is a mattress disposal job.

The fridge, freezer, washer, or dryer

  • A fridge or freezer still full and still plugged in
  • A washer or dryer waiting on the new pair
  • Book those with appliance disposal. Empty the fridge first. If a washer is still on the taps, say so when you book.

    The TV and the stand

  • An older flat screen, the stand, and the cables
  • Leave the screen intact. That gear can align with electronic disposal.

Do not park the old piece in the car's bay. A couch in the garage blocks the car. That plan is covered separately in park the car before winter. Holding it in the spare room is covered separately in clear the spare room before Christmas.

Set these aside. Paints, solvents, and unknown containers behind the fridge. Tell us when you book. Policies for specialty items can vary.

Retailer haul-away or a separate pickup

Read the delivery terms before you assume the old piece leaves with the new one. Haul-away, when a store offers it, is often limited, and it is easy to miss on the order.

  • Haul-away is listed for the matching item: an old fridge with a new fridge, or an old mattress with a new mattress, on an easy ground-floor path. Confirm it in writing, and keep a backup if the crew refuses it.
  • Haul-away is not on the order: assume the old piece stays. A delivery crew often will not take a couch when they are delivering a TV, or a washer when they are delivering a fridge.
  • The path is stairs, an elevator, or a narrow hall: many haul-away offers stop at an easy carry. Mention the floor when you book.
  • The old item is still full or still connected: a full fridge, or a washer still on the taps, is a common reason the crew leaves it. Empty what you can. Disconnect only what you can do safely.
  • You bought more than one upgrade: a TV, a couch, and a mattress rarely share one haul-away.
  • Both trucks are the same morning: they compete for the curb, the elevator, and the hall. Book the old piece a day or two before delivery.

  • A separate pickup lets you choose the day, so the floor is clear before the new piece needs it. Pricing is quoted by volume, and the firm price is confirmed on-site. Request a free quote, or see how volume quoting works on our junk removal page.

    Keep, donate, or haul

  • You will still use it, and it has a home: keep it. A second couch with nowhere to sit cannot stay.
  • Someone will take it before the delivery date: set a deadline a few days before the truck. If it is still there, haul it.
  • A charity has agreed to collect it in time: donate only if it leaves before your window.
  • Stained, torn, musty, or missing parts: haul it. Damp air does not improve a mattress or a cloth couch.
  • One bulky piece is all that is leaving: a single-item pickup may be enough.
  • A couch, a mattress, and an appliance share the week: book multiple items or residential junk removal.

  • We recycle and donate when possible. Share photos so the team can plan.

Why the old piece should be gone before the rain and the delivery

Leave the swap until delivery morning and both pieces end up in the hall, or the old one sits on a balcony that is not dry. November rain soaks foam and fabric.

Some stratas book the elevator in short windows, and holiday deliveries make those windows tighter. Mention the floor and any loading rule when you book. In a house, note the stairs, permit parking, and the truck stop.

Do not leave a mattress, a couch, or a fridge on a wet driveway overnight. A few hours in a dry garage is fine if the car's bay stays clear. Do not store the piece there through December.

Boxes from the new delivery are a later pile. Keep dry cardboard out of the rain. Wet cardboard goes with the haul, not with clean recycling disposal.

What you can prep before the crew arrives

A general pickup list is covered separately in how to prepare for a junk removal pickup.

    Safe DIY prep:

  • Measure the door and the landing, and confirm the delivery date
  • Empty the fridge, unplug it, and defrost it indoors on a towel the day before
  • If you can safely shut a washer's valves and disconnect the hoses, do that. If it is still hooked up, say so when you book
  • Unplug the TV, coil the cables, and leave the screen intact
  • Clear a path for two people and a dolly
  • Photograph the piece, the stairs or elevator, and the truck stop
  • Note gate codes, parking limits, and a strata loading window
  • Set paints, solvents, and unknown containers aside, and say so when you book

  • Leave to the crew when you are unsure: a sectional on a tight stair, a fridge around a corner, and any carry above the ground floor. Say if a washer is still connected. Do not disconnect a gas line yourself.

Single item vs a full haul

Lean single-item pickup when one couch, one mattress, one fridge, or one TV is leaving and the walk is straightforward. Confirmed haul-away for that same piece may cover it instead.

Lean multiple items or residential junk removal when a couch, a bed, and an appliance go the same day, or the store will take only one matching item. In a condo, name the elevator when you book apartment junk removal.

A bin is a different tool. A multi-day project is covered separately in bin rental or junk haul. One couch or one fridge is usually one visit. See bin rentals if a bin fits better. Same-day junk removal may be possible when the schedule allows. Book before the delivery window.

    Black Friday room checklist

    1. Read the order and see whether haul-away is included, and for which item

    2. Measure the path and decide what has to be gone before that date

    3. Give donations a deadline, then haul anything still in the room

    4. Empty and defrost the fridge indoors, and note if a washer is still connected

    5. Unplug the TV and keep mattresses and cloth furniture indoors and dry

    6. Clear the hall, the landing, and the elevator or stair path

    7. Request a free quote and note a couch, mattress, fridge, washer, or TV, plus stairs or a strata

    8. Book the pickup a day or two before the delivery window

    9. Keep the landing spot empty so the delivery crew is not moving the old piece
