What to Haul From a Retail or Restaurant Back Room Before the Metro Vancouver Holiday Rush

Go Junk Go Team
8 min read

The walk-in door will not shut because a stack of broken cafe chairs is leaning on it. A stainless prep table sits in the middle of the stockroom with a mixer that has not run since summer. Flattened cardboard from last week’s delivery is still against the loading door, and last season’s window display is in two bins nobody has opened since January. Halloween weekend is here, the clocks fall back on November 1, and the first holiday shipments are already on the calendar. A back room that worked as a junk drawer all year is about to be the only place new stock, extra seating, and party supplies can land.

This post is the early-November plan for a shop or a restaurant that stays open: broken seating, dead fixtures, packaging, and storage that has to move before the rush. A year-end office of desks and monitors is covered separately in our office cleanout before Q4 wraps. Debris a renovation crew already pulled is covered separately in fall reno wrap-up and in post-renovation cleanup. A household swapping a couch or a fridge for a delivery is a different pile, covered separately in Black Friday delivery haul. A spare bedroom at home is covered separately in clear the spare room before Christmas.

Why the back room has to be clear before the rush

New stock needs the floor the old fixtures are using. Shipments and supply orders land through the first half of November. If broken chairs and last season’s displays already fill the stockroom, the cartons that sell end up in the aisle or in the rain by the door.

Service gets longer before the parties do. Remembrance Day is Wednesday, November 11. Private bookings and longer dinner turns pick up after that.

Daylight gets shorter on November 1. The clocks fall back. A loading-door carry after dark takes longer than a pickup booked while you can still see the lane.

Bays book up, and the rain does not pause. A mall unit, a strata commercial space, or a lane often has a short window. Cardboard left by an open door soaks and then blocks that door. Same-day or next-day pickup may be possible when the schedule allows. Share photos so the team can plan the bay or the stairs in Vancouver, Burnaby, Surrey, or Richmond.

What typically piles up behind the counter

Walk the room before open or after close. The haul is what is already out of service, not product you can still sell.

Seating and front-of-house furniture

  • Broken cafe chairs, wobbly stools, and a booth seat with a torn cushion
  • Patio chairs that came inside for the wet season and will not go back out

  • Broken or stained pieces are a haul. Seating aligns with furniture disposal.

Fixtures, packaging, and last season’s displays

  • Gondola parts, a mannequin, and signage from a floor reset
  • Window bins from last holiday season, plus a rack already off the floor
  • Dry flattened cardboard, and wet cartons, foam, or broken pallet boards

  • Household Halloween props are a different pile, covered separately in seasonal decor clearout. Keep anything you can still sell. Dry cardboard can align with recycling disposal. Wet cardboard goes with the haul.

Screens, metal, and equipment already out

  • A dead point-of-sale screen, an old printer, or a monitor from the office nook
  • Shelving uprights and a pulled hand sink that is already off the wall
  • A prep table, a mixer, or a fridge that is unplugged, empty, and defrosted

  • Clear payment data before a screen joins the pile. Electronics align with electronic disposal. Metal can align with scrap metal removal. Empty appliances align with appliance disposal. Leave anything still on gas for a gas fitter. A unit that failed in a house is covered separately in appliance removal before winter.

Set these aside. Paints, solvents, aerosols, and unknown containers. Propane tanks vary by policy. Set them aside and tell us when you book. Food scraps, used oil, and grease belong with your usual waste service, not in the junk pile. If you suspect asbestos in old flooring, leave it in place and tell us when you book.

    Keep, donate, or haul

  • Product you can still sell, and supplies you will use in November: keep them on a shelf, off the junk pile.
  • A chair or a rack that is complete, dry, and safe, and that someone will collect this week: set that deadline, then haul whatever is still in the way.
  • Broken, stained, missing parts, or wet: haul it.
  • Mostly seating and store fixtures: book commercial junk removal.
  • Mostly a disconnected fridge or a stack of dead screens: say so when you book, and send them with the rest of the pile.
  • Dry cardboard only: keep it apart from wet cartons. Mixed rubbish can align with garbage disposal.
  • One chair stack or one appliance and a straight walk: a single-item pickup may be enough.
  • Chairs, shelving, and packaging the same morning: book multiple items.

  • We recycle and donate when possible. Wet cardboard and broken fixtures usually cannot be donated. The firm price is confirmed on-site. Request a free quote before you set the morning.

What a blocked loading door does through November rain

A carton stack at the door gets heavier once it takes on water, and new deliveries start landing on the sales floor.

In a mall or a strata commercial unit, loading bays and service elevators are booked in short windows. Name the unit, the floor, the bay, and who can open it. Street-front shops in Richmond, Coquitlam, North Vancouver, and the Fraser Valley often load from a lane. Note permit parking, and book the early morning before you unlock. Check your municipality’s rules before anything goes to the curb. Keep the pile inside the unit until the truck is there.

What this visit covers, and what it does not

Fixtures already out of service can leave. Chairs, shelving, displays, dry packaging, and disconnected appliances staged in one zone are a haul.

Food, oil, and a live kitchen are not this crew. We do not pump a grease trap, take used oil, or clear a walk-in that is still holding product. Empty the appliance, unplug it, and defrost it before we arrive.

A fit-out still being torn out is a different booking. If a wall, a floor, or a service counter still has to come out, see demolition and post-construction cleanup, and name it when you book.

A bin fits a reset that is still making scrap, if the pickup date is locked before holiday freight needs the bay. See bin rentals. How to choose is covered separately in bin rental or junk haul. A bin with no date, left in the only loading spot through December, is what this plan avoids.

What you can prep before the crew arrives

A general pickup list is covered separately in how to prepare for a junk removal pickup.

    Safe DIY prep:

  • Pick a morning when the floor can spare the path to the door, and write down who can open the bay
  • Empty, unplug, and defrost any fridge that is leaving. Leave gas equipment connected and say so
  • Clear payment data from point-of-sale gear before it joins the pile
  • Flatten dry cardboard and keep it apart from wet cartons
  • Photograph the pile, the door, and the path a truck can use
  • Set paints, solvents, propane, oil, grease, and unknown containers aside, and say so when you book
  • Leave suspected asbestos in place, and tell us

  • Leave to the crew when you are unsure: a rack you cannot tip safely, a fridge on a tight stair, and anything above the ground floor. Do not disconnect gas. Leave appliances upright.

One fixture vs a full back-room haul

Lean single-item pickup when one appliance, one rack, or one small chair stack is leaving and the walk to the door is straightforward.

Lean multiple items or commercial junk removal when seating, shelving, and packaging share the morning, or the unit is a shop or a restaurant. Name the loading bay when you book.

Lean a bin when a floor reset is still producing scrap every day and the pickup is locked before holiday freight needs that spot. A one-time pile is usually one visit. Same-day junk removal may be possible when the schedule allows. Book for early or mid-November, before the week you need the floor clear.

    Holiday-rush back-room checklist

    1. Walk the stockroom and the loading door, and photograph what is out of service

    2. Keep saleable product and November supplies off the junk pile

    3. Give any reuse pickup a deadline this week, then haul what is still blocking the door

    4. Empty and unplug appliances that are leaving, and leave gas lines alone

    5. Clear payment data from point-of-sale gear before it joins the pile

    6. Set paints, solvents, oil, grease, propane, and unknown containers aside, and say so when you book

    7. Note the bay, the lane, or a service elevator, and book that window now

    8. Request a free quote and describe chairs, fixtures, packaging, or a mixed back-room pile

    9. Book the pickup for early or mid-November, before new stock and party turns need the floor

Ready to clear the back room before the rush?

Broken chairs, old shelving, and last season’s display bins do not need to sit in the only storage you have once November freight arrives.
